Understanding how much I'd pay for damage

Article updated on 03/21/2024

If the car is damaged during your rental, Getaround’s insurance will cover the repairs. You should report any new damages to the owner immediately so they can submit a claim via their Getaround account to receive insurance coverage.

For any new damage(s) you fail to report, you will be liable to pay additional penalties.

Moreover, if you do not comply with our rental conditions, you risk losing the insurance coverage entirely.

Liability

If you are responsible for causing the damage or if it was caused by an unidentified third party:

In this case, you will be charged the repair costs up to the amount of the deductible. If you have purchased a Plus or Premium protection plan, the amount you must pay will be lower.

Example: for a rental with a deductible of 900 €,

  • if the repairs cost 500 €, you will pay 500 €.
  • if the repairs cost 1200 €, you will only pay 900 €.

If you cause several damages during your rental, the deductible will be applied for each individual damage. If you purchased the Plus or Premium plan, the corresponding deductible amount will only be applied to one of the damages (the one with the highest repair cost).

Example: if you subscribed to the Plus protection plan and cause 2 damages during your rental:

  • Damage # 1 costs 500 €
  • Damage # 2 costs 300 €

→ You’ll pay the reduced deductible (250 €) for damage #1, and the full repair cost (300 €) for damage #2, for a total of 550 €.

The deductible amount depends on the country in which you are renting and the category of the vehicle. You’ll find the complete list of deductible levels here.

If you are not responsible for causing the damages:

Our insurance provider determines liability for damage claims. If they conclude that you were not responsible for causing the damage(s), you will have nothing to pay.

In the event of an accident with a third party for which you are not responsible, the deductible (according to the protection plan purchased) will be applied at first. It will be reimbursed to you as soon as our insurance confirms that you are not responsible or once the third party has accepted the recourse made against them.

In the event of an accident with an unidentified third party, you will be held responsible for the damage(s).

Administrative fees

If you and the owner reach an amicable private resolution, no additional fees will be applied.

From the moment Getaround becomes involved in the processing of a claim, you will be liable to pay a 40€ administrative fee (unless you subscribed to the premium protection).

Depending on the situation, additional fees may apply:

  • If you fail to declare a new damage to the vehicle: a fee of 90 € will be applied.
  • If you are found responsible for damage(s) to a third party with a rented vehicle and you failed to report the damage(s) to the owner or to Getaround: you will be charged a 382€ fee to cover the processing of the insurance claim by Getaround.
  • If you cause an accident or if the vehicle is towed due to negligence on your part (fuel error, lost keys, etc.): you will be charged 200 € for the repatriation of the vehicle.
