Fuel costs are not included in the rental price. You must therefore return the vehicle with the same amount of fuel as it had at the start of the rental. If you bring the car back with less fuel than recorded during the checkin, you will be charged for the difference. If you did bring back the car with more fuel than at checkin, you will be refunded for the difference.

Fuel for paper and mobile rentals

Paper agreement

If you are using a paper agreement, go to our website, then Your rentals > [relevant rental] > ‘Request a price update (fuel)’, which is available up to 48 hours after check-out.

After 48 hours it is no longer possible to request an adjustment. Any request that has been received more than 48 hours after the rental has ended, will be declined.

Mobile agreement

If you are updating the price using a mobile agreement, make sure that the owner taps ‘Proceed with update’ once the agreement has been signed.

Getaround Connect Rentals

Not all Cars that have a Getaround Connect box are able to detect the fuel levels automatically. Depending on the type of car you rented, the process for recording fuel levels is different. In the following article, we will explain to you how the checkin and checkout readings for fuel works, no matter which car you booked.

Getaround Connect automatic readings

If the Getaround Connect box in your car is able to detect the fuel levels automatically, the levels will be detected at the checkin and checkout of the rental.

As a Driver, you will be invited to report through the App any significant difference between the dashboard levels and the automatic levels declared by the device.

How can I contest?

  1. At checkin and checkout you will always see an overview of the fuel rules, providing you with a clear reminder of both fuel expenses and refill fees.

  2. We will always ask you to verify the automatic fuel levels detected by the Getaround Connect box during the checkin and checkout process.

  3. If you disagree with the automatic fuel levels, you have to report it during the checkin and checkout process.

  4. If you have contested the fuel levels at checkin, you will always be asked to repeat the same process at checkout.

  5. If you do not contest the fuel levels at checkin and/or checkout we can not adjust the rental according to the levels you see on the dashboard.

How does the pricing work for fuel?

For rentals with automatic fuel readings, you’ll only be charged or refunded for fuel if the difference between the fuel level at checkin and checkout is equal or more than 5%.

For automatic adjustments on Getaround Connect rentals, the price per liter of fuel is fixed depending on the location of the rental:

To ensure fairness in compensating drivers and owners for missing or extra fuel, we calculate the reimbursement based on the current average fuel prices in each country (and each state if your rental is in the United States). This may differ from the fuel prices at the pump where you or the owner refueled the car.

However, if possible, we encourage you to refill the tank before returning the car as you will be charged 0,60€ (0,60£ in the UK, kr 6 in Norway) per missing liter for the refill service.

Getaround Connect with manual readings

If the Getaround Connect box in your car is not able to detect the fuel levels automatically, the system will always ask you to input the fuel levels manually.

How to add the correct fuel levels?

  1. At checkin and checkout you will always be asked to take a clear picture of the fuel gauge on the dashboard.

  2. Take Make athe picture and make sure the dashboard levels are clearly readable

  3. We will then also ask you to confirm the dashboard levels by adjusting the fuel levels in the app.

  4. At checkout, you can request an adjustment on the website or the app, via Your rentals > [relevant rental] > ‘Request a price update (fuel)’.

You have 48 hours after check-out to request the adjustment.
