Starting and ending my rental

Article updated on 12/07/2023

Please keep in mind that only the primary driver can start and end the rental in the app.

Starting the rental

On a rental with key exchange, you have no specific action on Getaround to start a rental. The owner is in charge of providing the contract, you simply need to fill it together, and sign it. For rentals in Norway, please refer to Starting and finishing a non-Connect rental in Norway.

On a Getaround Connect rental, you'll have access to the exact location of the car 1 hour before the beginning of the rental. Once you're there, go to Your rentals > selected the rental and then click on "Start the rental". You'll be guided through the check-in process step by step:

  • The exterior car inventory: You will need to take 10 pictures of the car (from all sides) so we all know what state the car was in before the rental. Once this is done, you can unlock the car with your smartphone.

  • The interior car inventory: Once the car is unlocked, you will need to take 2 pictures of the interior of the car and check the interior state and the cleanliness. Declare any damage and mess you see.

  • Fuel/battery level indication: Take the keys from the glove box or from the dedicated pocket under the sun-visor and confirm the fuel/battery level. All good, you can start your rental!

Ending the rental

On a rental with key exchange, you have no specific action on Getaround to end a rental. You simply need to fill out the rental agreement with the owner at the end of the rental, and sign it.

On a Getaround Connect rental, you have to return the car to the location indicated in the car's return instructions. (See "Returning the car to the correct location".

Once you're parked, go to Your rentals > select the rental then click on "End the rental". You'll be guided step by step:

  • Fuel/battery level indication: Indicate the fuel/battery level.

  • In case of an incident during the rental: Please report any new damages to the owner immediately so they can submit a claim via their Getaround account to receive insurance coverage. For any new damage(s) you fail to report, you will be liable to pay additional penalties.

  • Exterior and Interior photos: You will need to take 10 pictures of the exterior of the car (from all sides) and 2 pictures of the interior of the car. If there is damage declared at the end of the rental, these photos will be there to protect you. Therefore, they must be of good quality and legible.

NB: If the car is an electric car with a dedicated charging point, please make sure that you leave the car charging upon return.

In case the car can’t be charged, select “the car isn’t charging” and report the details of the problem(s) to avoid a 20€ penalty fee.
