Guide to distant returns

At the end of the rental, the driver should return the car to the address on the listing, unless another location has been mutually agreed upon.

For street parking: the driver should return the car within a radius of 400 metres of its listing position. You should provide additional guidance on where to park easily, or what specific zone is not authorized. If the driver parks the car more than 400 metres away from its listing address without your explicit agreement, you will be entitled to the following compensation:

  • from 400m to 2km away: 20€ (20£ in the UK)
  • from 2km to 10km away: 50€ (50£ in the UK)
  • from 10km to 20km away: 100€ (100£ in the UK)
  • more than 20km away: repatriation costs OR £/€200 (2000kr) (whichever is the highest)

Please be aware that you have 48h after the rental has ended to request compensation.

Please note the driver should not have to pay for parking. However, they must return the car in an authorized location. In the event of a ticket for parking in an unauthorized space, the driver will be responsible for paying the fine.

For private parking: the driver should return the car to the specific spot you describe in your instructions. If they park in another spot without your explicit agreement, you will be entitled to the following compensation:

  • other spot within the parking lot: 20€ (20£ in the UK)
  • within a 2km radius outside the parking lot: 30€ (30£ in the UK)
  • from 2km to 10km away: 50€ (50£ in the UK)
  • more than 10km to 20km away: 100€ (100£ in the UK)
  • more than 20km away: repatriation costs OR £/€200 (2000kr) (whichever is the highest)

NB: You will need to provide a receipt for any compensation if the car is delivered more than 20km away.

Management of an impounded vehicle due to improper or prohibited parking: In this situation, we recommend checking whether the impoundment is due to improper or prohibited parking during a Getaround rental, and then paying the associated fees. You can then contact us to charge the driver and you will get reimbursed (if the rental conditions have been met). To request reimbursement, go to My Rentals > [relevant rental] > Received violation during the rental.
