The cost of fuel is not included in the rental price. If you returns the car with less fuel than was recorded at the beginning of their rental, you will be charged the difference, and a small portion will be retained by Getaround. If you return the car with more fuel than at the start of the rental, the difference will be charged to the owner, and a refund issued to you based on the current fuel prices.
When picking up and returning the vehicle, you may notice a difference between the fuel level they see on the vehicle's gauge and the level recorded by the Getaround Connect device shown in the app.
If you notice a difference at the beginning of the rental, you must report it during the fuel reading step of the check-in process. You should provide a photo of the fuel gauge, as well as the fuel level in percentage. In order to have the same level of information at the beginning and end of the rental, you will be required to make this declaration again at the end of the rental (photo of the gauge and percentage reading).
If you notice a difference at the end of the rental, you must report it during the fuel reading step of the vehicle's return inspection. You will need to provide a photo as well as a fuel reading in percentage.
For most rentals, the readings from the Getaround Connect device are the ones considered by Getaround: meaning they are used to calculate the fuel adjustment.
However, in case of declaration(s) from you, Getaround may need to modify the fuel levels that will be used to calculate the fuel adjustment.
The Getaround team verifies the readings as soon as they are deemed significant for the amount of the adjustment.
The system calculates the adjustment that would have occurred using only the readings from the Getaround Connect device (Adjustment A).
The system calculates the adjustment that would have occurred using your manual readings. If there is only one manual reading by you at the end of the rental, the system takes the Getaround Connect reading for the beginning of the rental. (Adjustment B)
If the difference between these two adjustments (A vs B) is more than 15% of the tank capacity, Getaround handles the case and decides which adjustment to apply, using the Getaround Connect readings and the information provided by you.
The fuel gauge in cars is an imperfect measuring tool because the reading can be affected by factors such as sloping ground, vehicle heating level, outside temperature, etc. Therefore, readings always have a margin of error.
Furthermore, most vehicles have fuel gauges representing the level with decreasing light bars.
These bars are more approximate than a gauge with a needle. They also represent fuel level segments without indicating whether the vehicle is at the bottom or top of that segment, unlike the Getaround Connect device, which is more precise.
These segments typically represent 15% of the tank capacity.
Getaround has therefore decided to implement a fuel level adjustment rule when the difference is greater than 15%.
Example 1
Level collected by the Getaround Connect device | Level declared by the Driver
At check-in | 100% | 90% |
At check-out | 85% | 80% |
Difference between the values | 15% difference | 10% difference |
*confirmed by Getaround after verifying the Connect device and the photos of the gauge taken by the Driver
Difference between 15% and 10% = 5% => No adjustment is applied
Example 2
Level collected by the Getaround Connect device | Level declared by the Driver
At check-in | 65% | 80% |
At check-out | 100% | 100% |
Difference between the values | 35% difference | 20% difference |
*confirmed by Getaround after verifying the Connect device and the photos of the gauge taken by the Driver
Difference between 35% and 20% = 15% => No adjustment is applied
Example 3
Level collected by the Getaround Connect device | Level declared by the Driver
At check-in | 70% | 50% |
At check-out | 80% | 100% |
Difference between the values | 10% difference | 50% difference |
*confirmed by Getaround after verifying the Connect device and the photos of the gauge taken by the Driver
Difference between 10% and 50% = 40% => Getaround takes into account the level declared by the Driver and applies the corresponding compensation
Example 4
Level collected by the Getaround Connect device | Level declared by the Driver
At check-in | 100% | None (we use the automatic reading : 100%) |
At check-out | 85% | 80%* |
Difference between the values | 15% difference | 20% difference |
*confirmed by Getaround after verifying the Connect device and the photos of the gauge taken by the Driver
Difference between 15% and 20% = 40% => No adjustment is applied
