Protect yourself from scam rentals

Article updated on 03/22/2024

Despite the safeguards we have in place to protect drivers, sometimes fake owners publish cars on Getaround that don’t exist. The owner then tries to make the driver pay for the rental outside of Getaround to steal their money or payment information.

Here’s what you can do to protect yourself:

  • Do not communicate with the owner outside of the Getaround app or website.
  • Do not share personal information with the owner (phone number, email, card details etc).
  • Do not pay for extra fees like your protection plans or security deposit outside of our app or website
  • Check that emails claiming to be from Getaround end with @getaround.com, @mail-community.getaround.com or @mail-eu.getaround.com. Look out for misspellings and extra characters in the email address as well.
  • Check you are on the real Getaround website: 🔒https://getaround.com.

We will never ask you to make a bank transfer to confirm a rental.

Look out for suspicious behavior

Contact us via the details at the bottom of this page if:

  • An owner offers you a discount to pay outside of the Getaround app or website.
  • An owner asks you for extra payments for insurance or the security deposit.
  • An owner sends you an email or link to pay for your rental that appears to be from Getaround.

Paying outside of our app or website means no insurance

Paying on the Getaround app or website activates the insurance policy for your rental. An owner who suggests paying elsewhere puts you and themselves at risk.

The first rental payment is always made through Getaround and never in cash. Some adjustments can be made in cash if you and the owner agree. These would be arranged at the end of the rental.

Once you have paid for your booking, we will never ask for extra payments for the security deposit.

What to do if you think you’ve paid for a scam rental

If you have paid for a rental outside of Getaround (e.g. by bank transfer), and it does not appear in your Rentals tab, it may have been fraudulent. For help, contact us straight away.
